- Must be an international or German doctoral researcher already enrolled and supervised at their home university
- PhD topic must focus on European history from the early modern era to the present, with priority for digital methods, intellectual/religious history, environmental history, and cross-border research
- Must typically have spent no more than 3 years on the dissertation by the deadline (justified exceptions considered)
- Source research must already be sufficiently advanced; this is a completion-focused fellowship, not for early-stage proposals
- Must reside in Mainz throughout the fellowship, join academic events and weekly colloquia, and give at least 1 presentation
