India Sees a “Golden Opportunity” in Global Shipbuilding
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh believes India can use the growing gap between global vessel demand and shipbuilding capacity to emerge as a major maritime manufacturing hub.
The government is looking beyond just naval vessels. The opportunity could span:
• Defence & commercial shipbuilding
• Ship repair, maintenance & overhaul (MRO)
• Ship designing & engineering exports
• Greater participation from the private sector
A major step has already been announced — around ₹3,500 crore of expansion projects for GRSE and Yantra India.
GRSE is also expanding its infrastructure through two additional shipyard facilities along the Hooghly River and a 32-acre riverside facility at Raichak.
The interesting part: GRSE is already building a commercial vessel for a German customer and India has also started exporting warships.
India wants to move from being primarily a domestic defence shipbuilder to becoming a global shipbuilding + ship-repair + maritime engineering hub.
This could create a much larger opportunity across the entire maritime value chain — from shipyards to marine equipment, engines, electronics and components.
