Parents of Venerable Sergius of Radonezh
Commemoration
September 28/October 11
Venerable Cyril and Mary belonged to a distinguished boyar family. At the beginning of the 14th century, their estate was located near Rostov Velikiy in the village of Varnitsy.
They lived simply, their household life was close to that of a peasant and extremely pious.
Kind parents raised their children in humility, chastity and love, realizing that otherwise it would be impossible to acquire the Heavenly Kingdom.
The life of the venerable is especially adorned with evidence of their mercy and hospitality.
And the children were worthy of their parents. In his advanced years, the boyar Kirill had to leave the Rostov land and move to Radonezh.
At the end of their lives, Saints Cyril and Mary wished to become monks and, leaving all earthly care, went to live in the Khotkov Monastery in order to forever become the guardians and patrons of this land. Here they spent the last days of their lives in unceasing prayer and contemplation of God, having accepted the schema.
