🏁 The story behind the Ferrari (the company)
A salesman who once raced for Alfa Romeo built, in Maranello, one of the world's most valuable car companies.
Enzo Ferrari founded Scuderia Ferrari in 1929 as an Alfa Romeo racing team. After leaving Alfa in 1939, he started Auto Avio Costruzioni, building a single car, the 815, before World War II intervened.
In 1945 the company took the Ferrari name, and its V12-powered 125 S began winning races in 1947. Ferrari went public in 1960, and in 1969 Fiat bought 50% of its shares.
After Enzo died in 1988, Fiat's stake rose to 90%. Luca di Montezemolo led a 23-year expansion, and in 2016 Ferrari was spun off from Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, later valued at about $85.5 billion.
💡 Did you know? Between 1929 and 1937, Scuderia Ferrari won 144 of its 225 races.
