We stopped for the night at a hamlet. It consisted of exactly two houses. In the single room of each of the two huts, eighty Croatian volunteers were crammed together, standing against each other.

It was impossible to fit anyone else into these two rabbit hutches. The two small pigpens were also teeming with countless chilled soldiers who had no way to dry themselves.

So we had no choice but to climb up to the hayloft, which was located between the ceiling and the hut's roof. At the gable, it was a meter high. Then we had to climb from beam to beam, very carefully, so as not to fall through the thin clay-straw ceiling onto the Croatians below. More than a hundred men were crammed together. The situation was agonizing. Our feet were frozen in our heavy boots, still filled with ice water. Since morning, we had eaten nothing but a piece of stale army bread. And not even all of us! Many didn't even have a crust left!

The troops managed to run as far as the Isbas and take some semblance of cover. Lying flat on the floor of my mountain sled, unable to take even a step, I heard the shrapnel hitting the boards on the side. A Croat, running with outstretched arms, collapsed on top of me; where his eyes should have been, he had horrific, fist-sized red holes.
