The Freedom of Not Chasing
I think I have finally reached that stage of life where I am no longer chasing anyone—or anything.
For the longest time, I was always running after something: a person, a feeling, an answer, a version of life I thought would finally make me feel complete. But somewhere along the way, I stopped running. And strangely, in that stillness, I found freedom.
I no longer feel the need to worry about who stays, who leaves, who understands me, or who chooses me. I have been good to people, and I will continue to be. Not because I need anything in return, but because kindness is simply a part of who I am. I don’t want to lose that part of myself just because the world hasn’t always been kind to me.
The difference now is that there is no longer a void inside me waiting for someone else to fill it.
I am slowly learning to find happiness in my own company. I have begun to understand that being alone doesn’t always mean being lonely. Sometimes, when there is no one around, I find a kind of peace that I could never find while constantly seeking someone’s presence.
I still love meeting new people. I want to talk, laugh, connect, and slowly become less afraid of the awkwardness that once made me anxious. But I have also learned that connection doesn’t require complete access to me. I can have conversations without giving away every piece of myself. I can let silences be awkward. I can let people know me gradually. I can be warm without being completely exposed.
There is something beautiful about realizing that not everyone needs to know your whole story.
Maybe growing up is not about becoming distant or cold. Maybe it is about learning where to place your heart—and understanding that it doesn’t have to be placed in someone else’s hands to make your own life meaningful.
For the first time in a long time, I don’t feel like I am waiting for something to happen before I can be happy.
I am here.
I am enough.
And perhaps this is what freedom really feels like—not having everything you once wanted, but no longer needing someone else to complete what you already have within yourself.
