🇺🇸 #US - 🇨🇳 #China: US Ambassador to China David Perdue said Sunday that President Donald Trump had asked Chinese President Xi Jinping whether he wanted to buy American weapons at one point, while discussing Washington’s arms sales to Taiwan.
Perdue said Trump had been defending the US arms sales to Taiwan by pointing out that Washington sells weapons to countries around the world, adding that Trump had even asked Xi if China would be interested in buying US weapons. Perdue did not specify when the alleged offer was made or what Xi’s response was. The comments came as a proposed $14 billion US arms package for Taiwan remains on hold.
US officials later on denied this and said Washington has no plans to sell weapons to China, with the State Department saying US law prohibits such arms sales and that there is “no offer or plan” to sell weapons to Beijing. President Donald Trump then denied discussing the sale with Xi, saying Perdue was probably referring to Taiwan rather than China.
