✍️Opinion: UK's Lack of a Stablecoin for the Pound Could Cause It to Lag Behind the US and EU

Mark Fairless, Group CEO of ClearBank, a banking infrastructure and fintech company, points out that the UK needs to regulate and actively promote the development of a stablecoin for the pound sterling
🔼 to ensure the country's financial services industry remains competitive in global markets.

"Stablecoins are actually a reasonable extension of tools for reducing friction in international payments," Fairless said in an interview with Cointelegraph at the Web Summit 2025 in Lisbon, Portugal. 👤

He points out that because the pound sterling is not a global reserve currency, the market capitalization of a stablecoin for the pound sterling will not be comparable to that of tokens denominated in the US dollar or euro.
