چاره
هر شب دو جوان را به آشپزخانهٔ ضحاک می‌برند تا مغزشان خوراک مارهای او شود. در میان این کشتار، ارمایل و گرمایل، دو مرد نیک‌اندیش، چاره‌ای پیدا می‌کنند؛ چاره‌ای که نمی‌تواند همه را نجات دهد، اما می‌تواند هر شب جان یک نفر را حفظ کند.
آن‌ها یکی از دو جوان را پنهانی آزاد می‌کنند و مغز گوسفند را جایگزین مغز او می‌سازند. نجات‌یافتگان راهی کوه و دشت می‌شوند؛ دور از شهرها و فرمانروایی ضحاک. به این ترتیب، هر ماه سی جوان از مرگ می‌گریزند.
And so it was that every night, two youths,
Of humble birth or noble warrior blood,
Were slain, their brains removed and made
A feast for the serpents of the king.
Yet two men of pure and royal spirit,
Noble of heart and steadfast in their faith,
One Armayil, a man of righteous soul,
The other Garmayil, wise and foreseeing,
Resolved that of the two condemned to die,
At least one life might yet be saved.
And so they spared one of the two,
For no other way could they devise.
They took the brains of a slaughtered sheep
And mingled them with those of the other youth.
“Remain not in the cities of men;
The mountains and the plains shall be your home.”
Thus, month by month, from certain death,
Thirty young lives were rescued and set free.
چُنان بُد که هَر شَب دو مَردِ جَوان
چِه کِهتَر چِه اَز تُخمِهٔ پَهلَوان
بِکُشتی و مَغزَش بِپَرداختی
مَر آن اَژدَها را خُورِش ساختی
دو پاکیزه اَز گُوهَرِ پادِشا
دو مَردِ گِران‌مایه و پارسا
یِکی نام اَرمایِلِ پاک‌دین
دِگَر نام گَرمایِلِ پیش‌بین
مَگَر زین دو تَن را که ریزَند خون
یِکی را تَوان آوَریدَن بُرون
اَز آن دو یِکی را بِپَرداختَند
