The chain itself is materially decentralized: 42 active validators run by independent operators, every parameter change goes through governance. Anyone can run a node, stake, and vote. Of course it's not like bitcoin, but technically the network does not depend on a single party to keep running.
Product direction is a different thing. The team takes input from the community and the network, and where there's no clear signal we make the call and try to steer the project in a good direction. Anyone who disagrees with the direction is always invited to share feedback and ideas...
