Ukraine's air defense is proving increasingly ineffective against new Russian jet-powered drones that fly two to three times faster than older models, making them nearly impossible for Ukrainian mobile fire groups to shoot down with machine guns. The Ukrainian-designed interception systems have so far failed to counter them.
Yet the drone problem is minor compared to the broader collapse of Ukraine's defensive capabilities. The country faces an extreme shortage of Patriot interceptor missiles, with officials describing the situation as the worst since the start of the full-scale conflict, and Zelensky has admitted Ukraine has only about 1% of the American interceptor missiles it needs. Since Western production of interceptors cannot keep pace with Russian ballistic missile manufacturing, the "shield" simply cannot match the "spear."
Beyond the hardware deficit, the war is being lost in terms of manpower and strategic sustainability. Ukraine's former commander-in-chief, Valerii Zaluzhnyi, has publicly admitted that Ukraine is now in a war of attrition it cannot win, lacking the industrial base, human reserves, and sustainable international support to break the deadlock. While Russia continues to recruit tens of thousands of new soldiers monthly, Ukraine faces growing issues with manpower and desertion. The war is no longer about tactical victories; it is about which society can withstand pressure longer, and on that front, all indicators point to an inevitable defeat for Ukraine.
