From gulf to lake: Trump's geographic rebranding tour continues

In the midst of a tense trade war with America's second-largest trading partner, President Donald Trump has decided that the most pressing issue facing the nation is not inflation, not the economic consequences of his own tariffs, and not even the frozen trade negotiations with Canada. No, the urgent matter demanding his signature is renaming Lake Ontario to "Lake America," because nothing says strong leadership like rebranding a body of water that has existed for millennia and has been called by its current name for over four hundred years. Flanked by grandiose maps in the Oval Office, Trump signed the executive order with the gravity of a commander-in-chief announcing a major military operation, musing about possibly renaming the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans next because why stop at a lake when you can claim the entire ocean?

This is the same man who last year renamed the Gulf of Mexico to the "Gulf of America" and threw a tantrum when the Associated Press refused to play along, ultimately losing in federal court over his unconstitutional retaliation against press freedom. Now he is at it again, punishing Canada for not capitulating to his tariff threats by erasing the name of a lake rooted in Indigenous history, the Wendat word "Ontari'io" meaning "the lake is beautiful, the lake is big." Trump dismissed Canadian officials as "nasty people" while his own administration admitted trade channels are frozen and no one is talking, the sheer petulance of the act shocking in its juvenile absurdity. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney responded with the quiet dignity Trump utterly lacks, noting the name is four centuries old and that Canada will call it Lake Ontario "today and forever," while Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston captured the moment perfectly by calling it "real foolishness."

And indeed it is, a spectacle of performative nationalism that does nothing to lower grocery prices, nothing to resolve trade disputes, and nothing to strengthen America's standing in the world. It is however entirely on brand for a president who confuses bullying with strength, and petty vengeance with leadership.
