Ontario Premier Doug Ford is threatening to cut off electricity to 1.5 million U.S. homes and businesses in retaliation for Trump's tariffs, and experts warn this could drive up already soaring power bills across the Northeast.
This is entirely Trump's doing. He imposed a 50 percent tariff on $20 billion in Canadian goods, and Canada fired back. Now Ford is playing hardball, saying "everything is on the table" — including pulling the plug on the power that keeps New York and other northern states running. Trump started this fight, and the American people are the ones about to get burned.
Canada supplies less than 1 percent of U.S. electricity overall, but states like New York rely heavily on those imports. If Ford follows through — especially if other provinces join him — energy experts say prices could spike. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology estimates a shutoff could cost between $300 million and $600 million per year. And that's on top of electricity costs already up 4.2 percent over last year, outpacing inflation. Trump's tariffs are literally making it more expensive to keep the lights on.
Grid operators admit the impact would be "largely financial, in the form of higher wholesale market prices." Translation: you'll pay more and get more pollution, as utilities fire up expensive gas plants to replace cleaner Canadian hydropower. Higher bills and dirtier air — thanks, Mr. President.
