The Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant has been completely cut off from the external power grid since August 20, after the last still-functioning 330-kV line “Ferrospalnaja-1” was damaged. According to the plant management, the damaged section is located on the side of the Dnipro controlled by Ukraine.
Since then, all critically important systems of the facility have been powered by emergency diesel generators. They primarily ensure the operation of the pumps required to cool the six shut-down reactors and the spent fuel storage pool. The fuel supply on site is enough for about ten days.
In the past few days, the NPP itself reported multiple attacks by Ukrainian drones. On August 26, a drone struck the dry spent fuel storage site, and the IAEA confirmed that within just one week there had been several incidents involving UAVs at the facility, in one of which employees were injured.
If the external power supply is not restored and no new diesel deliveries arrive, the NPP could already be facing the danger of a complete loss of power in about ten days. The radiation level remains within the normal range at present.
