It was very late and everyone had left the café except an old man who sat in the shadow the leaves of the tree made against the electric light.
In the daytime, the street was dusty, but at night the dew settled the dust and the old man liked to sit late because he was deaf and now at night it was quiet and he felt the difference.
The two waiters inside the café knew that the old man was a little drunk, and while he was a good client, they knew that if he became too drunk he would leave without paying.
One waiter said, “Last week he tried to commit suicide.”
“Why?”
“He was in despair.”
“What about?”
“Nothing.”
“How do you know it was nothing?”
“He has plenty of money.”

كان الوقت متأخرًا جدًا، وقد غادر الجميع المقهى، إلا شيخٌ مسنٌّ جلس في ظلٍّ رسمته أوراق الشجرة على ضوء الكهرباء.
في النهار كانت الشوارع مغطاة بالغبار، أمّا في الليل فكانت ندى الليل تُسكن الغبار، وكان الشيخ يحب الجلوس حتى ساعة متأخرة، لأنه أصمّ، والليل هادئ، فيشعر بالفارق.
كان النادلان في داخل المقهى يعلمان أن الشيخ ثملٌ قليلًا، ومع أنه زبون جيد، إلا أنهما يعرفان أنه إن سكر أكثر، سيغادر دون أن يدفع.
قال أحد النادلين: "لقد حاول الانتحار الأسبوع الماضي."
فسأله الآخر: "ولماذا؟"
قال: "كان يائسًا."
قال: "من ماذا؟"
أجاب: "من لا شيء."
قال: "وكيف عرفتَ أنه من لا شيء؟"
قال: "لديه الكثير من المال."
