About the Role:
We are building a technology platform in the property rental space, launching in Addis Ababa. We are seeking a local lawyer to provide guidance as we establish the legal and regulatory framework for our business prior to launch. This is a consulting engagement (retainer) with the potential to evolve into an ongoing advisory relationship as the company expands.
What You'll Help Us With:
• Business registration and structuring (including considerations around foreign investment participation)
• Navigating the regulatory landscape for property rental services in Addis Ababa, including the new municipal lodging tax and registration requirements
• Drafting host/property-owner agreements and standard terms of service
• Providing guidance on liability, insurance, and dispute resolution frameworks between the platform, hosts, and guests
• Ensuring payments and tax compliance (VAT, municipal levies, foreign currency considerations)
• Conducting general regulatory risk assessments as we scale beyond an initial pilot
Who We're Looking For:
• Ethiopian-qualified lawyer based in Addis Ababa
• Strong background in real estate, property, or hospitality law; regulatory/compliance experience is a significant plus
• Familiarity with Ethiopian investment law and business licensing processes
• Comfortable advising an early-stage startup; pragmatic, responsive, and able to work directly with founders rather than through a large firm process
• Fluent in Amharic and English
Engagement:
• Initial scope: a working session to map out the regulatory landscape, followed by ongoing advisory support
• Open to remote consultations with in-person meetings as necessary
