Australians are finding themselves in a battle they never thought they would have to fight.
Free speech has come under unprecedented attack, accelerating over the past year to the point where a political party has now been banned.
Australia has never had a First Amendment or a federal Bill of Rights. Political expression has instead received constitutional protection through the implied freedom of political communication, derived from the system of representative government established by our Constitution.
But now, the ideas that can be expressed and the political organisations that can participate in our democracy are increasingly being regulated in the name of protecting so-called “multiculturalism” and “social cohesion”, just as Australians are beginning to stand up and demand a different direction for their country.
