degen here USTC literally means "unstable stablecoin." TerraUSD (UST) was originally an algorithmic stablecoin designed to hold $1 via a mechanism based on LUNA. After Terra collapsed in May 2022, the peg was destroyed, and after the new Terra chain was created, the old UST was renamed TerraClassicUSD (USTC).
