Hungary's construction industry fell sharply in Q2 2026, with only HUF 470 billion worth of new projects launched, roughly half the value seen at the start of the year, according to the EBI Construction Activity Report for the second quarter, prepared by Eltinga, iBuild, and Buildecon. High‑rise construction weakened the most, as projects entering the execution phase failed to reach HUF 350 bln, while non‑residential developments also dropped to an eight‑year low.
Deep‑construction activity slowed significantly after the Paks II boost in Q1, with new Q2 projects barely exceeding HUF 120 bln and dominated by energy investments rather than road or rail works.
The regional distribution of developments shifted. The Central Transdanubia region captured 26% of new projects, surpassing Budapest’s 25%, mainly due to the M1 motor way expansion.
Housing construction also slumped, with Q2 condominium starts just above HUF 100 bln, although completions reached HUF 180 bln, marking an 11‑year high driven by earlier large projects. https://bbj.hu/business/real-estate/construction/construction-sector-hits-multi-year-low/
