Randomized Clinical Trial of the Year

As an Associate Editor of JAMA Internal Medicine, I am excited to highlight the randomized clinical trial by Panay et al, which is my pick for the best clinical trial published in JAMA Internal Medicine last year. This study addressed a health condition that affects millions of women worldwide: menopause. Some women experience mild symptoms, and for others, vasomotor and sleep symptoms can seriously disrupt functioning and quality of life. Not all women are able to use hormone therapies. However, the widespread use of non–evidence-based menopause symptom management (eg, black cohosh, primrose oil, vitamin E, and phytoestrogens) is concerning due to the lack of efficacy or safety data.
