End-of-life cancer care represents a pivotal period for patients, families, and care providers. Palliative care consultation can enhance the quality of end-of-life care for patients with cancer, which has been demonstrated to be beneficial. The palliative care workforce, while growing, is still inadequate to meet patient care needs. Furthermore, the effectiveness of palliative care programs has been inconsistent in prior research, with some programs improving quality of life but not health care utilization. Specifically, hospice utilization varies widely despite the consistent presence of palliative care services in many oncology settings.
