Preventing maternal morbidity and mortality remains an urgent global priority, yet progress has been unsatisfactory. Although maternal mortality has declined globally, the rates have increased in the US and infections are among the top causes of preventable deaths. Among women undergoing cesarean delivery (the most common major surgical procedure in the US), the risk of infection is many times higher than after vaginal delivery, underscoring the importance of effective prophylaxis.
