"A LITTLE LOWER THAN THE ANGELS”
Psalm 8: Part 4
"For thou hast made him a little lower than the angels, and hast crowned him with glory and honour.” — Psa. 8:5 KJV
This is the key verse of the series. At first reading, Psalm 8:5 appears to speak about humanity. And in its immediate context, it does. David is describing mankind's remarkable position within creation.
But there is something fascinating here. The Hebrew expression translated “a little lower than the angels” is understood differently across translations, and the New Testament quotation in Hebrews follows the Greek Old Testament and renders the phrase in terms of being made lower than the angels.
Then Hebrews does something extraordinary. It applies the passage directly to Jesus Christ. Heb. 2:6–9 The writer says: “But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honour…” This means Psalm 8 has a humanity dimension and a Christological fulfillment.
The pattern is:
- God's purpose for humanity
- Humanity's failure
- Jesus becomes truly human
- Jesus fulfills humanity's intended destiny
- Jesus is crowned with glory and honour
Jesus is therefore not merely being inserted into an unrelated verse. He fulfills what Psalm 8 reveals about God's purpose for man.
Key Lesson:
Psalm 8 shows us what humanity was created to be—and Hebrews shows us that Jesus is the perfect Man who fulfills that purpose.
