🌊 Life at Sea vs. Social Media Dreams ⚓ Once upon a tanker… I had my wife and daughter onboard for a few days while we were at berth. We were sitting in the ship’s office when a new joiner walked in — neatly dressed in full suit, tie, and carrying a briefcase. He introduced himself as the “new cadet.” My wife, with her innocent land-based perspective, immediately whispered: “Is he the owner’s representative? Or maybe the superintendent?” 😅 I just smiled and said, “You’ll see tomorrow.” 👉 Next day, the same “gentleman in suit” appeared again — but this time in dirty overalls, scrubbing the bulkhead! My wife ran to me, wide-eyed: “Wait… yesterday he looked like a boss. Today he’s cleaning the ship??” I had to explain — “He’s a cadet, under training. This is how they start their journey.” Later during bridge watch, I had a chat with him. He looked disappointed. Why? Because he had joined shipping after seeing all those glamorous posts on social media — big captions, fancy uniforms, anchor tattoos, shiny compass rings… He thought that’s how life onboard really is. Reality hit him hard. Even though the crew treated him kindly and spared him from heavy work, the stress got the better of him. Sadly, he couldn’t finish his contract. 💡 Moral of the story: Life at sea is not Instagram. It’s sweat, discipline, training, and patience before you shine as an officer.
