Dear Parents, As part of our commitment to maintaining transparency and helping families better understand student reports, we would like to clarify how the overall average shown on the Ministry of Education report card is calculated. The overall average is not calculated using a simple arithmetic mean of all subject grades. Instead, it is calculated using a weighted average as adopted in the official educational systems. What is a weighted average? A weighted average is calculated by assigning each subject a weight based on the number of instructional periods or approved credit hours allocated to that subject. As a result, some subjects may have a greater impact on the overall average than others, depending on their weight within the academic program. Therefore, parents may notice that the overall average displayed on the report card differs from the result obtained by simply adding all subject grades and dividing by the number of subjects. This is because the system calculates the average according to the approved weight assigned to each subject. A simple example: If Mathematics is taught for a greater number of periods than another subject, the Mathematics grade will have a greater impact on the overall average than the subject with fewer instructional periods. We would also like to emphasize that this calculation method is the one officially adopted in educational systems for generating results and reporting averages, and it is the same method used in official academic records and reports.
