Critiques of digital multitasking research often focus on the interpretive leap made between observed behavioral patterns and inferred cognitive limitations. In several widely cited studies, participants classified as “habitual multitaskers” were identified based on self-reported behavior rather than objective monitoring. Although the authors acknowledge that such classifications may be vulnerable to reporting bias, they nevertheless argue that the consistency of results across independent samples lends credibility to their conclusions, even if the underlying mechanisms remain only partially explained.
