Although several neuroscientific investigations have reported associations between habitual digital multitasking and reduced performance on measures of attentional stability, the authors of these studies consistently emphasize the tentative nature of such findings. Many explicitly acknowledge that the metrics used to quantify attention may fail to capture compensatory cognitive strategies developed outside controlled experimental settings. Furthermore, while some commentators extrapolate these results to predict a decline in overall intellectual capacity, the original research does not address intelligence as a construct, nor does it attempt to measure it directly.
