Salal & Indus Waters Treaty
Under the Indus Waters Treaty (1960):
Western Rivers: Indus, Jhelum and Chenab
Eastern Rivers: Ravi, Beas and Sutlej.
The Western Rivers were allocated primarily for Pakistan's use.However, India has certain permitted uses, including hydroelectric power generation. Hence, India can construct run-of-the-river hydroelectric projects on the Western Rivers subject to treaty conditions.
Indus Water Treaty was asked in ACIO mains 2025. Hence do prepare it holistically.
