Breast cancer may be linked to more than just geneticsResearchers at UCSF have identified a possible biological link between dense breast tissue and cancer risk.
Their findings suggest that stiff, dense tissue creates mechanical tension that changes the behavior of nearby macrophages, immune cells that can enter an inflammatory state. These cells can then release chemicals capable of damaging the DNA of surrounding healthy cells.
The discovery points to a different way of thinking about cancer development: the physical environment around cells may help create conditions where tumors can emerge.
Importantly, this is still research, it does not mean doctors can currently prevent breast cancer by targeting this pathway. But the mechanism could eventually lead to new prevention strategies for women with high breast density.
