The Date I Almost Didn’t Go On
I matched with her on a dating app on a Thursday night. We talked for maybe three days before she casually said, “You’re actually easy to talk to. Coffee sometime?”
I said yes, but honestly, I wasn’t expecting much.
We decided to meet Saturday evening at a small café. I got there about ten minutes early and immediately regretted agreeing to it. I kept checking my phone, pretending to be busy while actually wondering if I should just order coffee and leave.
Then she texted: “I’m outside. I’m wearing a black shirt. Please tell me you’re not the guy staring at his phone like he’s waiting for exam results 😂.”
I looked up and laughed because she was standing right in front of the café window.
The first five minutes were awkward. We both said “How was your day?” at almost the same time. Then we laughed about how awkward the question was, and somehow that broke the ice.
We ordered coffee and started talking. I expected the usual questions—work, studies, hobbies—but instead she asked me, “What’s something you’re embarrassed to admit you’re bad at?”
I said, “Cooking.”
She looked surprised and said, “You look like someone who survives entirely on tea and frozen food.”
She was right.
We ended up talking for almost two hours. At one point, she accidentally knocked over her glass of water. She looked completely embarrassed, grabbed some tissues, and said, “Well, at least now you know I’m not pretending to be perfect.”
That actually made me like her more.
When we finally left, it had started raining. Neither of us had an umbrella. We stood outside the café for a few seconds trying to decide what to do.
She suddenly said, “There’s a bookstore around the corner. Let’s wait there.”
So our coffee date unexpectedly turned into walking through a bookstore while it rained outside.
We spent another hour there, showing each other books we would probably never read. Before leaving, she picked up a cheap notebook and said, “I’m buying this because apparently our first date lasted much longer than planned.”
I asked, “So is that a good thing?”
She smiled and said, “Ask me after the second date.”
That was probably the first time I went on a date without checking the time every ten minutes.
And honestly, the unexpected part wasn't that I met someone amazing.
It was that I almost didn't go at all.
