SUFISM IN THE DEEN (PART 2)
The goal of studying Fiqh is to guide one's body through the worship of Allah. The goal of studying Aqeedah is to guide the heart in understanding Allah. The goal of Sufism is to discipline the soul and purify it so it can reach its goal.
Allah orders us to believe (with the heart), do good deeds (with the body) and purify our mind and soul. He says:
وَمَن تَزَكَّىٰ فَإِنَّمَا يَتَزَكَّىٰ لِنَفْسِهِۦۚ وَإِلَى ٱللَّهِ ٱلْمَصِيرُ
And whoever purifies himself only purifies himself for [the benefit of] his soul. And to Allah is the [final] destination. [Q35:18]
Elsewhere, Allah ﷻ ordered Prophet Musa (AS) to guide Pharoah to purity. He says:
ٱذْهَبْ إِلَىٰ فِرْعَوْنَ إِنَّهُۥ طَغَىٰ
"Go to Pharaoh. Indeed, he has transgressed.
فَقُلْ هَل لَّكَ إِلَىٰٓ أَن تَزَكَّىٰ
And say to him, 'Would you [be willing to] purify yourself
وَأَهْدِيَكَ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ فَتَخْشَىٰ
Let me guide you to your Lord so you would fear [Him]?'" [Q79:17-19]
Comment on the reward for self-purification, Allah says:
قَدْ أَفْلَحَ مَن تَزَكَّى
He has certainly succeeded who purifies himself
وَذَكَرَ ٱسْمَ رَبِّهِۦ فَصَلَّىٰ
And mentions the name of his Lord and prays. [Q87:14-15]
And so on...
Islam is submitting to the will of Allah because you think it's your best option. Iman is submitting to the will of Allah knowing that it is actually the best option. Ihsan is submitting to the will of Allah knowing that there's no other option in reality but the will of Allah.
People of Islam worship Allah in order to be granted Jannah or saved from Jahannam. People of Iman worship Allah in order to seek for Allah's pleasure and contentment. People of Ihsan worship Allah in order to seek for Allah. If Allah put them in fire after all their worship, they will burn smiling & contented.
People of Islam follow the Shari'ah, abiding by the Wajib (Compulsory do's) and avoiding the Haram (Compulsory don'ts). Here you find people who only pray the 5 daily, Fast only Ramadan, give Zakat and perform Hajj if they can. For example, consider the #hadith 1 https://t.me/barhamatv/263?single
People of Iman follow the Tariqa, consciously abiding by the Sunnah acts (voluntary actions) and avoiding the Makruh (Disliked acts). Here you find people adding up to their compulsory deeds by way of Nawafil; frequent Nawafil, extra Zikr (voluntary), avoid smoking (Disliked), etc. These ones actually go an extra mile because they want to be closer to their Lord. People of Ihsan follow Haqiqa and are so careful that they don't only abide by Wajib and Sunnah, or avoid Makruh and Haram, but they also strive to control the Mubah (permissible acts). Notice how RasulaLlah ﷺ followed up this hadith with a profound advice for everyone to take care of the HEART for your overall success depends on the state of your heart -your heart- which is the main subject of Sufism!
This is RasulaLlah teaching Sufism. One might argue that it wasn't called Sufism at that time but this is a truly weak and unguided argument.
We say to them, if a rose called a rose because of its sweet smell, then if you call maize rose, does it make the maize smell as sweet?
Does a name define an action or does an action define a name?Jurisprudence wasn't known as Fiqh. A scholar wasn't called a Shaykh. Proper recitation of the Qur'an wasn't called Tajweed. But all these names were accepted and adopted by consensus because of what they stood for was valid. So why is Sufism the only thing they choose to judge by nomenclature?
Sufism is all about growth. Moving from one level of Islam to another, self purification and perfecting one's Deen overtly and covertly.
So if this is what Sufism is - and it is what it is - then Sufism is surely the way of the Prophet ﷺ.
