While Stereolithography is the most widely cited and logical origin for the STL acronym, it is also commonly referred to as Standard Triangle Language or Standard Tessellation Language. The original file format was created by the Albert Consulting Group for 3D Systems in 1987, as part of the software for the first commercial stereolithography (SLA) 3D printer invented by Chuck Hull. Hull himself has stated the file extension is an abbreviation for "stereolithography". However, because the file format describes a 3D object's surface geometry using a mesh of linked triangles (a process known as tessellation), the alternative names are also considered plausible and are used interchangeably in the industry.
