New York City—the largest public school system in America—is imposing a one-year moratorium on student-facing generative AI for children in grades 2-K through 8th grade, affecting nearly 600,000 students.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani said children need teachers, human connection, relationships with educators, interaction with their peers, and the opportunity to wrestle with difficult problems on their own.
