*US-Canada trade flux may give India an edge in Ottawa negotiations*
The collapse of Canada’s trade talks with Washington may add momentum to negotiations between New Delhi and Ottawa for a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (Cepa), which both sides are hoping to conclude by the end of this year. The development could give India additional leverage in the Cepa negotiations, particularly as Canada seeks to open new markets while facing a sharp deterioration in its trade relationship with its largest trading partner. “The US introduced at the last hour... efforts to restrict our ability to have other trade deals. Unacceptable. Canadian businesses now enjoy tariff-free access to 1 and a half billion consumers. Over the next six months, we’ll double that number through new trade deals from Asean to India,” Carney said on Saturday while addressing the media. Economist and former Niti Aayog member Arvind Virmani posted on X: “We need to accelerate signing and implementation of an India-Canada Cepa.
