[Tan Jiak Kim] ⚰️ On 22 Oct 1917, Tan Jiak Kim, a prominent Peranakan Chinese merchant successful in the banking and insurance industries, passed away. 💼 He was conversant in Malay and homeschooled in English and contributed significantly to the Straits Settlements community and donated generously to the less fortunate. 👊 As the longest-serving Chinese member on the Straits Settlements Legislative Council, Tan fought for the retention of the Queen’s Scholarship. 🎓 He recognised the importance of scholarships as a stepping stone to higher education at overseas tertiary institutions. 🏛️ Tan Jiak Kim, together with other Peranakan Chinese businessmen like Lim Boon Keng and Tan Cheng Lock helped establish the banks that would merge to become the Oversea-Chinese Banking Corporation (OCBC) group in 1932. 🥂 Jiak Kim Street was named after him, and in 1999 Jiak Kim Bridge was built along Robertson Quay to remember him. #Yangs #local #culturewednesday🌏
