Older books (especially pre-2000s textbooks and popular histories) more often included or at least mentioned:
• The role of international banking houses and war finance (who lent to both sides)
• Economic and geopolitical motives beyond the simple “good vs. evil nations” framing
• Specific incidents that later editions downplay, sanitize, or omit (Lusitania circumstances, Pearl Harbor foreknowledge debates, who actually declared war first in certain theaters, postwar financial arrangements, etc.)
• Less sanitized language around certain leaders, treaties, and outcomes
Newer books increasingly present a cleaner, more ideological version: nations and “-isms” as the main actors, with financial and elite continuity largely removed or reduced to footnotes.
