In a major cybersecurity breakthrough, authorities dismantled the Sality botnet on August 31, 2026, severing access for its Russia-based operators to more than 15,000 compromised devices worldwide.
Active since 2003, the botnet relied on a cunning yet straightforward method: scanning clipboards for copied Bitcoin or Ethereum addresses and silently replacing them with attacker-controlled onesโdiverting funds without detection.
Twenty-three years is an eternity in the digital world. That it operated undisturbed for so long is both impressive and alarming.
Better late than never, perhaps.
