Von Zinken had joined the Prussian Service at the age of 16, but had resigned and settled in New Orleans in 1857. The red headed Prussian served as drillmaster for the German companies in camp. When Col. Augustus Reichard retired due to illness on July 7, 1863, Von Zinken became colonel and led the regiment at Chickamauga. During the Atlanta Campaign, he was badly wounded.
