In the spring of 1861, as the South rose to defend its independence and homes from Northern invasion, sixteen-year-old Edwin Francis Jemison answered the call. he enlisted in Company C (Pelican Grays), 2nd Louisiana Infantry.

Edwin served in the Peninsula Campaign. On July 1, 1862, at the Battle of Malvern Hill during Lee’s successful defense of Richmond, the seventeen-year-old fell in a gallant charge. Accounts describe him struck down by artillery while advancing in the front rank — one of many young Confederates who gave everything for Dixie.
