FlyDubai flight FDB1073 from Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE) to Tel Aviv, Israel diverted to Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, today after a violent altercation in the cockpit.
Israeli officials say the Omani co-pilot stabbed the captain and attempted to seize control of the aircraft as it descended toward Tel Aviv, causing the plane to drop sharply in altitude before being brought back under control.
Off duty crew and passengers, several of them Israeli, helped subdue the co-pilot. Both pilots were hospitalized after landing.
The aircraft, a Boeing 737 MAX 8 carrying around 174 people, briefly transmitted the transponder code used to signal a hijacking situation (7500) before landing safely. Israeli authorities are investigating the incident as a possible attempted terror attack, and FlyDubai says a motive has not yet been established.
