DiGeorge syndrome results from a 22q11.2 deletion causing abnormal development of the third and fourth pharyngeal pouches. This produces thymic aplasia with T-cell deficiency, parathyroid aplasia with hypocalcemia, and conotruncal cardiac abnormalities.
