1. H1N1 in India: No New Strain, Existing Vaccines Sufficient
WHAT HAPPENED
ICMR reported that the H1N1 viruses currently circulating in India belong to the A/Missouri/11/2015 (H1N1)pdm09-like virus strain, with no new H1N1 strain identified.
CORE ISSUE
India is witnessing a seasonal rise in H1N1 cases, but current circulating strains remain well matched with available vaccines.
KEY DETAILS
- Current strain: Predominantly A/Missouri/11/2025 (H1N1)pdm09-like virus, with the lineage circulating since 2025.
- Cases rising: Delhi reported over 1,777 confirmed H1N1 cases by August 2026, while Kerala and Karnataka also reported rising cases.
- No new strain: ICMR found no evidence of a new or more dangerous H1N1 strain; infections are likely to decline as the current strain continues circulating.
- High-risk groups: Children, elderly people, pregnant women and those with underlying medical conditions face higher risks of complications.

2. Polysilicon Manufacturing: Building India’s Solar Supply Chain
WHAT HAPPENED
MNRE is formulating a dedicated subsidy scheme to establish 30 GW of domestic polysilicon manufacturing capacity by 2030.

Reducing India’s dependence on imported upstream solar materials by developing domestic polysilicon production.
KEY DETAILS
- What is polysilicon? A high-purity crystalline form of silicon and the key upstream feedstock for solar PV ingots/wafers and semiconductors.
- Manufacturing: Quartz/silica → metallurgical-grade silicon → chlorosilanes → purification → ultra-high-purity polysilicon through Siemens Process or FBR.
- High purity: Solar-grade polysilicon generally requires 6N–9N purity, while semiconductor-grade requires even higher purity.
- Strategic importance: Domestic production can strengthen India’s solar manufacturing and semiconductor value chains, while reducing vulnerability to imported upstream materials.
WHY IT MATTERS
Polysilicon is a critical link between raw silicon and finished solar cells/semiconductors. Building domestic capacity can improve India’s renewable-energy supply-chain resilience and strategic autonomy.
