UPSC, EPFO/APFC & State Services: How to Plan Your Preparation
You might be confused about how to plan your studies and which examination you should target. Let me simplify it for you.
1. If UPSC is your only priority
If you are solely focused on UPSC and do not want a backup option right now—or you already have a backup—then focus completely on UPSC.
Prepare for Prelims + Mains in an integrated manner until December. After December, shift your preparation exclusively towards UPSC Prelims.(Pathfinder October first week se start hoga)
Remember, UPSC should remain the ultimate goal for those who have decided to pursue it wholeheartedly.
2. If you want UPSC + a State Service backup
If you want to prepare for UPSC while keeping a State Service examination as your backup, then give priority to your State PCS examination until December.
Whether it is UPPCS, BPSC, or any other State PCS, prepare strategically for that examination while simultaneously building your UPSC foundation.
And one important point: do not underestimate State Services.
A top State Service position such as SDM has its own authority, responsibilities, career growth and prestige. In many respects, it can be a much better fit than several Central Government positions.
If you speak to people working in the Central Government who are not IAS, IPS or IFS officers, many will tell you that a good State Service position is an excellent career in its own right.
So, if you have a State PCS opportunity, take it seriously.
3. If you don't have a State PCS target
If you do not have a State PCS examination coming up and you also do not wish to appear for one, then EPFO/APFC can be your backup target.
Among the two, I would suggest keeping APFC as the higher priority.
Why? If you are highly ambitious and your ultimate goal is UPSC-level responsibility, you may eventually feel that an EPFO position(Level 8) does not fully match your aspirations.
So, use the period until December to prepare for APFC/EPFO along with UPSC, and after December, shift your complete focus towards UPSC Prelims.
The key is not to prepare randomly for multiple examinations. Choose your priority based on your situation and follow a clear strategy.
