John Singleton Mosby (December 6, 1833 – May 30, 1916), also known as the "Gray Ghost," was a Confederate cavalry officer. His unit—the 43rd Battalion of the 1st Virginia Cavalry—was known as "Mosby's Rangers" or "Mosby's Raiders."
It was a partisan force that successfully conducted lightning raids behind enemy lines and escaped pursuit with impunity by melting into the local population. Mosby operated in Northern Virginia, an area that came to be known as "Mosby's Confederacy."
