Bill Gates says we’ve entered a “turbulent era of AI.” This shift could eliminate entire job sectors, fuel fraud and deepfakes, lower the barrier for cyberattacks on critical infrastructure, and reshape how children grow up.
While he’d back a realistic global plan to slow AI’s advance, he doesn’t expect one—geopolitical and economic forces are simply too powerful. In an interview with Axios, he warned that the current trajectory carries a high risk of negative consequences, and criticized both major U.S. political parties for failing to act.
Gates suggests creating “jobs reserved for humans,” along with taxes on robots and AI tokens—funding that could come from the value generated when AI replaces human labor. Still, he remains hopeful about AI’s potential in agriculture, healthcare, and education.
