"Saint Matthias" — Simone Martini
Price: $16,000
This small panel once belonged to a dismantled altarpiece. Now in New York, it’s one of many fragments scattered across museums. Saint Matthias, rarely depicted, replaced Judas, chosen by lot. His rarity may explain the infrequent medieval portrayals.
The golden background reflects divine space — typical of the Sienese school, where gold added literal light. Lit by candles, these panels shimmered, evoking the saint’s presence.
Scholars now credit this work more to Simone Martini’s workshop than his own hand — common in 14th-century studios. The design likely stems from his drawings, executed by assistants.
