Unveiled in Baku on April 12, 1961 — the day Yuri Gagarin’s spaceflight was announced — this painting stunned its creator with its eerie prescience. Salakhov painted it long before, driven by an “inner, optimistic impulse,” not commission. The massive canvas required moving to a school for completion.
Its elongated figures and glowing orbs symbolize humanity’s leap into space, echoing early satellites. Yet its bold style clashed with Soviet norms. Fearing backlash at Moscow’s Manege exhibition, Salakhov withdrew it — and it vanished for decades.
Rediscovered and restored in the 21st century, it appeared in Moscow and at the Venice Biennale. In 2011, marking 50 years since Gagarin’s flight, it was featured on an Azerbaijani postage stamp — a rare tribute.
