«Black River» — Leonid Stukanov. $23,000.
At first glance, a winter landscape. But look closer: in the lower left, a black figure on a red footbridge — the artist’s friend, Alexander Zhdanov. The scene was inspired by Zhdanov’s estate “The Landing” near Zvenigorod.
The river is not water, but a deep, black rift — like a tear in space. Stukanov transformed real views into metaphors for inner life, seeing nature as a reflection of the soul. Remembered as a relentless seeker, he reimagined the familiar.
Oil on cardboard, 70 × 56 cm — modest in size, monumental in impact. Decades later, it became the poster for his retrospective “Graf” in Rostov-on-Don.
Thick, glowing snow contrasts with the flat, void-like river — creating a border between real and imagined. That tension gives the work lasting power.
