"The Little Street" — Johannes Vermeer
Vermeer painted modest houses with cracked walls and peeling plaster, not palaces. In the 17th century, this quiet lane scene was more surprising than grand cityscapes.
No one poses. Women work, children play—life unfolds naturally. It feels like a fleeting, unguarded moment, quietly observed.
Long debated, the location is now known: Vlamingstraat 40–42 in Delft. The right house once belonged to Vermeer’s aunt, Ariaentgen Claes van der Minne—evidence he knew the place well.
Research shows Vermeer first painted the left doorway closed. Later, he opened it, added children, and repositioned a woman—adding subtle movement and drawing us in.
One of only two Vermeer cityscapes, its power lies in stillness: a simple wall and quiet life made profoundly worth lingering over.
