«Altar with the Passion of Christ» — Master of the Schlegel Altar. $30,500.
Only fragments remain of this 15th-century altar, once a full narrative of Christ’s final days. Created for a Westphalian church, it was later dismantled; some panels lost. Today’s survivors ended up at Austria’s Schlegel monastery — hence the artist’s name, unknown but enduring.
These altars were “books for the faithful,” guiding viewers from suffering to resurrection. Passion cycles surged then as Franciscans, Dominicans, and mystics urged emotional connection to Christ’s story. Artists responded with dramatic, human scenes, drawing viewers in.
The work captures a turning point: Gothic traditions meet emerging realism and psychological depth, shaping Northern European art.
